Apnex represents the latest addition to a growing list of companies that are now in the business of sleep apnea. I have looked at this market before, and none of these companies have come up with a breakthrough. Almost everyone seems to be going back to implants in the tongue/throat area and I am not sure if this will actually represent a breakthrough.
Interestingly, Apnex is going for an IDE, I guess to stave off competition if their product works. A 510(k) would make regulatory approval somewhat easy for future competitors..
The types of competition are quite varied: orthodontal products, CPAP machines, external modified masks and internal implants.
Lets see who wins the war on sleep! My bet is on something new....
